ROLFING® CHANGE YOUR STRUCTURE CHANGE YOUR LIFE

by Deanna Melnychuk, Certified Advanced Rolfer
How does my body acquire tension and restrictions?
There are three possibilities: the most obvious is the physical body-accidents (sprains, broken bones, pulled ligaments) and surgery. However, both emotional and mental difficulties create holding patterns in the physical body. Emotional issues, such as loss of a loved one, discord in a relationship and mental issues including stress on the job, an adjustment in home environment or worry about health will take a toll on your body.
The ability of your body to rebound decreases after each episode and you experience chronic pain, a sense of fatigue, a lack of flexibility, poor posture and perhaps depression.
What does a Rolfer do? How can Rolfing help?
A Rolfer evaluates your myofascial patterns while you stand and walk. She looks for holding and bracing. Then through a series of 10 sessions (each usually 75 minutes long), the Rolfer will systematically free the restrictions using hands or elbows.
There are times she will ask you to breathe into the restriction or make micro-movements.
Both of these contribute to an additional stretch and release of tightness in the tissues. When the tissue is freer, the muscles can do their work easily and the joints move with less effort.
As you progress through the Rolfing series, you gain more length and lightness. Along with the structural Rolfing, you will continually learn new ways of breathing, walking, rising, and sitting. This enables your body to expand and retain the new length and flexibility. After a session, you may experiment with new options for movement. These rapidly become habits and replace old patterns such as slumped shoulders, walking on the outside of the feet, or holding the head forward.
Soon your body feels light and spacious as you realign within the gravitational field. It is as if a weight has been lifted from your shoulders and this is literally true. As the pelvis becomes more horizontal, the torso and head with their bony and muscular structures are appropriately supported and no longer drag you down.
Your physical emotional and mental bodies can change significantly. As the connective tissue lengthens, it also softens and the muscular tone improves, resulting in greater range of motion and improved flexibility and coordination. Emotional issues that may arise are generally easily dealt with and stress which may be held in the shoulders and neck gradually melts. The result is a sensation of lightness, vertical alignment, spaciousness and increased energy.
