The distraction forces utilize logartithmic loading to avoid proprioceptor response which would create muscle spasm. The split-table design decreases friction and allows separation of the vertebra, minimizing the effect of gravity.
Patients typically undergo a series of 15 to 20 treatment sessions. Depending on diagnosis, each treatment lasts between 30 and 45 minutes. If muscle spasms are present just before treatment, heat and myofascial release are applied for 30 minutes. Following a session a cold pack is applied.
